Review: Will the Government’s toll free helpline 14444 for digitalpayments really useful ?


As reported by BumbelBee Hub (A popular Indian business blog) The toll free helpline for digital payments is now live. Citizens can call 14444 so that they can get more information on new digital payment methods such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), BHIM app, wallets and prepaid cards and debit and credit cards. The helpline was launched in collaboration with the IT and telecom ministry.

The helpline was announced in December following the demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

Review of the 14444 helpline


Following are the key points about the newly launched helpline of the 14444

  • The helpline is made available to all subscribers on all telecom networks.

  • This helpline has a daily limit and allows users to call only thrice to access information.

  • The report added that the cost of the project will be borne by the industry, though it doesn’t specify which industry.

  • No vernacular or regional languages are available as of now and helpline answers only has two languages, English and Hindi.

Calling to 14444


When you call to helpline number 14444, you'll be presented with the option that if you are a merchant or you are a customer. When we tried the helpline to get some information regarding the digital payment methods and it lists the following:

  • Debit cards

  • Credit cards

  • Prepaid cards and wallets

  • UPI

  • USSD payments

we selected as prepaid cards and wallet as an option and tried to fetch information from the helpline cell. But the information was not available and call gets ended with message that it would get back to us.

Then in the next try, the selected option was speaking with the customer care executive. We are going to ask more information about wallets as a option to accept payment for merchant. The reply from the executive was not up to the mark and no clear and specific information was given The executive said that there were many options for wallets and added that they could not recommend a particular service to be used.

On pressing for more information, the executive gave us basic information of the USSD payments and the UPI. The executive also gave basic information on the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System and directed us to find a micro ATM on Google.

Is this service usable ?


Considering the overall experience on the newly launched helpline 14444, the information on the the helpline was basic in nature and not up to the mark. The informaiton database would be enriched after few days and also focused information structure can be provided to the executives thus they can be able to solve the queries from the person with lack of knowledge about digital payments.
